City Attractions

Things to see and do in Tromsø City

Tromso is an island city in the High Arctic on the 69th parallel, known as the 'Paris of the North'.

Here you will enjoy friendly modern hotels, fine dining and vibrant bars. This is a small, intimate city with a population of (100,000). The city centre and bustling waterfront is a 10 minute taxi or bus ride from the airport. Most major attractions are within a short walk, there's the Polaria Marine Centre, the Polar Museum, The Glass House (glassmaking), The Mack Brewery (unique bar and tour), excellent shopping, whale watching tours and sea fishing trips.

Take the mountain cable car for fantastic views over the city and view the Arctic Cathedral, an inspirational design overlooking the harbour with a stunning mountain backdrop. The Villmarkssenter is just 30 minutes away for short dog sledding trips (city based).

The city of Tromso has long been the gateway to the north. All major Polar expeditions started here. The history is here to view and experience. Access to the Troms region starts in Tromso, with cruise ships, car ferries (Hurtigruten), coach or self-drive car as the prime means of travel.

The city of Tromso is perfect all year round with Northern Lights in the winter and the Midnight Sun in summer. It really is a friendly, safe city for all seasons and within a few minutes drive you feel you are in a national park.

Below is an essential list of things to do & see.
Mack Brewery

The most northerly brewery in the world and one of Norway's oldest. Having a strong family tradition, the Mack Brewery provides a wide range of lager beers which are most popular with North Norwegians and visitors alike. The Oldhallen (Old Hall) is part of the brewery tour and serves beer and coffee from 9am to 5pm rather unique opening hours which are linked to an historic past. Short walk from the town centre.

GlassHytte... A unique glass works that creates works of art and classical gifts right in front of your eyes. Superbly entertaining and open year round, opposite the Mack Brewery and close to the city centre.

Polar Museum

Fronting the harbour in the city centre, this delightful museum is a tribute to Norways rich arctic expeditions. All major polar expeditions departed Tromso and this museum explains the history perfectly. Lots of artifacts, extremely interesting and educational. Opening hours vary with the season.

Polar Institute

A place of learning centred on Polar exploration, geology, climate and wildlife. King crab, wolf fish and bearded seals are studied here but also provide a great exhibition. Most enlightening and entertaining.

Tromso Botanical Gardens

(June to September). The world’s most northerly botanical gardens, beautifully created outdoor display with many rare alpine plants and flowers, Short walk from the city centre.

Husky Dog Trips
